Authorities and traditional leaders in KuGompo City (formerly East London) in South Africa’s Eastern Cape have raised concerns over the reported coronation of a Nigerian community leader.

Reports indicate that Chief Solomon Ogbonna Eziko was crowned “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London” by members of the Nigerian community on 14 March 2026.

The Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) and the House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders have rejected the coronation, describing it as unlawful and inconsistent with South Africa’s legal framework governing traditional leadership.

Officials stated that the recognition of traditional leaders is regulated under national law and cannot be established outside existing cultural and legal structures.

Traditional leaders within the amaRharhabe Kingdom also condemned the move, saying it disrespects established authority and could create tensions within communities.

Political organisations, including the African Transformation Movement (ATM), have called for an investigation into the matter, arguing that such actions may undermine the country’s governance systems.

Authorities have indicated that law enforcement agencies may be involved in addressing the issue.
