Wanted robbery suspect shot dead after allegedly attacking detective in Lamu

A wanted robbery with violence suspect was shot dead by police after he allegedly attacked and seriously injured a detective during an attempted arrest in Lamu County on Wednesday evening.

According to police, the incident occurred on June 24, 2026 in Kijitoni area.

The officers involved were reportedly conducting inquiries when they encountered a suspect identified as Ali Kasim Athman, who was wanted in connection with a robbery with violence case.

Police said the suspect was ordered to surrender but allegedly defied the command, charged at the officers and drew a knife.

During the confrontation, he is reported to have stabbed one of the officers on the left upper arm before attempting to stab him again in the neck.

In response, the injured officer drew his CZ pistol and fired at the suspect, hitting him in the left thigh in what police described as an attempt to subdue him.

Both the suspect and the injured officer were rushed to Lamu County Referral Hospital for treatment. However, the suspect reportedly bled profusely and succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

The officer remained admitted to hospital and was reported to be in serious condition undergoing treatment.

Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) officers documented the scene and recovered a knife believed to have been used in the attack. Investigators also recovered a Tecno mobile phone that police said had been reported stolen on June 3, 2026.

The suspect’s body was moved to the King Fahad County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Investigations will cover the suspect’s past activities to establish them for a closure. The area has been experiencing a surge in violent robberies in the past days, locals said.
