Wemba grabs lead as Lakowe Lakes Classic heads to final round

Zambia’s Sydney Joseph Wemba moved to the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Lakowe Lakes Golf Classic, carding a level-par 70 to reach four-under-par 140 after 36 holes at the Lakowe Lakes Golf Estate in Lagos.
Wemba, who started the day one shot off the lead, followed his opening-round 70 with another 70 to take sole possession of first place heading into the final round.
Ghana’s Vincent Torgah and fellow countryman Ezekiel Afisco are tied for second on one-under-par 143, both carding rounds of 71 to move within three shots of the leader.
Rwanda’s Celestin Nsanzuwera, who led after the opening round, slipped to fourth after a two-over-par 75, leaving him on level-par 144 alongside Uganda’s Ronald Rugumayo, who also carded a 72 in the second round.
Nigeria’s David Inalegwu and Godwin Okoko are tied for sixth on one-over-par 145. Inalegwu produced one of the day’s stronger rounds with a three-under-par 69, moving up the leaderboard after starting the day on six-over-par, while Okoko carded a one-over-par 72.
A three-way tie for eighth on two-over-par 146 features Mustapha Abubakar and Sunday Olapade of Nigeria, alongside Cameroon’s Nji Pristhy, who all finished the second round on 75, 73 and 72 respectively.
Nigeria dominates the next group, with Safiyanu Muaza, Jimoh Eneye, Odeh Alechenu, Kamalu Bako and Simeon Udum Saater tied for 11th on three-over-par 147.
The Lakowe Lakes Golf Classic is the Sunshine Development Tour’s first event in West Africa, marking a significant expansion of the Tour’s competitive platform and bringing together players from across Africa and beyond. The tournament features 139 players from 10 countries, including professionals and amateurs competing for a share of the US$50,000 prize fund.
Beyond the prize money, players are also competing for valuable Official World Golf Ranking, World Amateur Golf Ranking and Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit points, adding further significance to the tournament as players seek opportunities to progress through the development pathway towards the main Sunshine Tour.
