National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is among several individuals who have recorded statements with detectives investigating the death of businessman and politician Cyrus Jirongo, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said.

The DCI also indicated preliminary findings indicate the incident was a road traffic accident, with no signs of foul play at this stage.

In a statement issued on Monday, the DCI said Wetang’ula, alongside the owner a bar Jirongo was before he died Rebman Malala and Ibrahim Sambuli, voluntarily presented themselves to investigators for grilling.

This was after it emerged they had interacted with the deceased on the evening of December 12, 2025, at Karen Oasis restaurant, hours before the fatal incident.

Jirongo died on the night of December 13, 2025, after an incident at Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

The DCI said it immediately launched comprehensive investigations, deploying a multi-disciplinary team comprising homicide detectives, officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory.

According to investigators, the team processed the scene, secured and preserved exhibits, documented physical evidence and recovered CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station for forensic review. Detectives also obtained the bus manifest and amateur video footage from the scene, which are undergoing analysis.

Statements have been recorded from several key witnesses, including Jirongo’s widow, Ann Lanoi Pertet, who was the first family member contacted after the incident; the driver of the bus involved, Tiras Kamau Githinji, the bus conductor, Manoah Ekokwa Alukoya Olasi and staff at Eagol Petrol Station.

Seven passengers from the bus also presented themselves to assist with investigations, while detectives further recorded a statement from Julius Kiprotich Chelule, the driver of the alleged rescue bus.

Based on evidence gathered so far, the DCI said preliminary findings indicate the incident was a road traffic accident, with no signs of foul play at this stage.

“Upon conclusion of the remaining investigative processes, the investigation file will be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for appropriate directions, including possible criminal charges against the PSV driver, in line with the available evidence,” the statement said.

The DCI conveyed condolences to Jirongo’s family, relatives and friends, and urged the public and political leaders to refrain from speculation or unsubstantiated claims that could prejudice the investigations or cause public anxiety.

Members of the public with information that could assist the probe have been encouraged to contact the nearest police station or reach the DCI through the #FichuaKwaDCI toll-free line 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp number 0709 570 000.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to conducting impartial, thorough and expeditious investigations in accordance with the law.

The death has turned political with many claiming Jirongo was killed.
