Woman arrested as 10-year-old son dies after punishment in Kakamega

A 10-year-old boy died in Butere, Kakamega County, after allegedly being beaten by his mother as punishment for loitering at a local market.
Police said the incident happened in Ebukuti village in Manyalla location.
A team of police officers visited the home and established that the boy, a Grade Five pupil at Manyalla Primary School, had allegedly been caned by his mother on May 23, 2026.
Investigators said the mother, punished the child for allegedly loitering at the market.
The boy reportedly became ill after the beating and his condition deteriorated until his death.
Police found the body lying on a bed with a swollen neck, bruises on the hands and blood stains from the mouth and nose.
The scene was processed and the body moved to Butere Level 4 Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
The mother was arrested and is being held in police custody pending further investigations.
And an elderly man died after being found with deep cut wounds along the Kapkesosio–Bomet road in Chepalungu, Bomet County.
Police said the incident was reported on Monday morning and identified the victim as Zakayo Kiplangat Koech, 80. He was found unconscious at Koita area with deep cuts on the head and both hands.
Family members rushed him to Longisa County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police officers from the National Police Service visited and processed the scene as investigations into the murder began.
Police said further follow-up reports on the incident will be issued.
Meanwhile, a man died after he was hit by a train near the Likoni underpass bridge in Nairobi.
Police found the body of a male adult lying beside the railway track with severe injuries after being struck by an unidentified train.
A driving licence recovered from the victim identified him as Chogo Kelvin.
Investigators believe the victim was walking along the railway line when the accident occurred.
The scene was processed by crime scene investigators from Makadara and the body was moved to the City Mortuary pending postmortem examination.
Police have classified the matter as a pending investigation.
