Woman killed in panga attack while taking daughter to school in Kakamega
A 23-year-old woman was killed in a suspected panga attack allegedly carried out by her brother-in-law in Lutoto Village, Kakamega East, on Thursday morning.
The deceased, identified as Patience Mapenzi Sulubu, was reportedly attacked as she escorted her three-year-old daughter, to school.
According to police, the suspect, is the brother of the deceased’s husband. The deceased and the suspect were living in the same compound, together with her daughter, while her husband is reportedly working in Dubai.
Police said the attack occurred early in the morning when the suspect allegedly confronted Sulubu at the compound’s gate and attacked her with a panga.
She reportedly ran towards the house but collapsed outside the compound and died from her injuries.
Police said the woman had deep cuts to her neck and head.
Her three-year-old daughter was also injured during the attack, sustaining a cut to the head. The child remained responsive and was rushed to hospital by members of the public in serious condition.
The woman’s body was removed and taken to St Elizabeth Mukumu Mission Hospital Mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.
The suspect reportedly fled immediately after the incident and remained at large as police launched a search for him.
Meanwhile, police are investigating the discovery of the decomposing body of an unidentified man believed to be about 30 years old has been discovered in a thicket in Kangari Village, Kirinyaga East Sub-county.
The body was found on Thursday, September 24, 2026, within the farm of a resident, in Mbiri Sub-location, Njukiini North Location.
Police said the deceased was an unidentified African male adult whose body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
No visible injuries were observed on the body at the scene.
The scene was processed and the body was removed to Kerugoya County Referral Hospital Mortuary, accompanied by DCI officers.
Detectives are expected to undertake fingerprinting and further investigations to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding his death.
An autopsy is also expected to help determine the cause of death.
