Women Senators Condemn Sexual Violence During June 25 Protests

The Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) has strongly condemned the violence witnessed during the June 25, 2025 protests, with particular concern over reports of sexual assault against women and girls.
In a statement issued by KEWOSA Chairperson Senator Veronica Maina, the Association described the chaos as “senseless violence” that led to loss of life, serious injuries, and disturbing acts of rape and molestation.
“We particularly decry the violence that was meted out on women and girls, including acts of sexual violence which, unfortunately, are being celebrated by the perpetrators and some members of the public on social media,” the statement read.
KEWOSA termed the acts as a gross violation of human rights and warned that sexual violence during protests is often used to silence and intimidate women from participating in democratic expression. The senators questioned why women and girls had been specifically targeted.
“Why should demonstrations target the bodies of women and girls? How does the rape of women and girls assist anyone to achieve their objectives?” the Association asked.
While affirming the constitutional right to peaceful protest under Articles 33 and 37 of the Constitution, the Association urged Kenyans of goodwill to speak out and report anyone involved in the “heinous acts.”
KEWOSA also called on the State Department for Gender and the National Gender and Equality Commission to urgently offer both medical and psychological care to survivors.
Additionally, the Association urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to launch immediate investigations and asked the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to prosecute suspects swiftly and fairly.
They further demanded that the protest organizers publicly clarify their position on the violence and take responsibility for what occurred.
In conclusion, KEWOSA reaffirmed its support for all survivors and called for unity and peace.
“Violence has no place in a democratic society. Our nation’s strength lies in creating a peaceful environment where all citizens can thrive,” the senators said.
