Brazil was the first team to don kits with stars above their crest. They introduced the tradition in the 1970 World Cup to celebrate the titles they had won in 2958 and 1962.

It soon got standardized and formalized by FIFA and the tradition spread even to some club competitions. Each star depicts the number of title(s) won.

Uruguay has won the World Cup twice, 1930 and 1950, yet for the those of us who are keen you will have noticed they have 4 stars above their crest in this year’s tournament. Why?

Before the inception of the world cup in 1930, Uruguay had won the Olympic games football gold in 1924 and 1928, they were the world soccer powerhouse of that era.

FIFA resolved to recognize the Olympic gold of those years as world championships, equivalent to the latter day world cup. That’s why they have 4 stars in their jerseys.

Will Kenya ever rock a star? Harambee Stars, maybe?

Uruguay are in the quarterfinals of the Russia World Cup and will take on France on Friday at Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, 5 PM Kenyan time.
