Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) website was yesterday was hacked and later pulled down, after the election overseer failed to regain access.

A picture acknowledging the protests was placed front and centre where the Commission used to host their own content. A message in red was left, marking the day (August 1 2018) as a day of remembrance in Zimbabwe.

“The people of Zimbabwe Will Never Forget August 1 2018,” read  the message by the hackers.

The commission came out today to acknowledge that the website had been hacked, but later pulled down after 11 minutes.

“Yesterday some hackers hacked our website and we pulled it down within eleven minutes when we realised that they were now posting images that were not coming from the commission. We saw images that were not our images,” said ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo.

Up to this time, no group has taken responsibility of the hacking.

Yesterday, Zimbabwean troops backed by armoured vehicles opened fire against protesters to clear the capital’s streets of demonstrators who accused Mnangagwa’s ruling party of trying to rig Monday’s presidential election.

Three were killed and scores injured during the stampede.
