Zoë Wanamaker is an American-born British actress renowned for her extensive work in theatre, television and film.
Born on May 13, 1949, in New York City, she moved to London at the age of three when her father, actor and director Sam Wanamaker, was blacklisted during the McCarthy era’s anti-communist investigations.
Her mother, Charlotte Holland, was a Canadian actress and radio performer.
Raised in a secular Jewish household of Ukrainian descent, Zoë was educated at the independent King Alfred School in Hampstead and Sidcot School, a Quaker boarding school in Somerset.
She later trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, setting the stage for a prolific career.
Wanamaker holds dual American and British citizenship, the latter acquired in 2000 to receive a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) from Queen Elizabeth II.
Siblings
Zoë has two sisters, Abby Wanamaker and Jessica Wanamaker.
Abby, the eldest, was born in 1942, and Jessica, the youngest, was born in 1954 in London after the family relocated to the United Kingdom.
The Wanamaker sisters were raised in a creative and liberal environment, influenced by their parents’ theatrical backgrounds and their father’s commitment to cultural projects, notably the reconstruction of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Career
Wanamaker began in theatre, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1976 to 1984, where she performed in numerous plays, earning critical acclaim for roles in productions like Once in a Lifetime and Electra.

Her stage work extended to the National Theatre, with notable performances in Much Ado About Nothing as Beatrice and Arthur Miller’s All My Sons as Kate Keller.
In 1997, she became the first person to speak on the stage of the newly reconstructed Shakespeare’s Globe, a tribute to her father’s legacy, and later served as its Honorary President.
On television, Wanamaker gained widespread recognition as Susan Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family, which ran from 2000 to 2011.

Her Broadway performances earned her four Tony Award nominations for Piaf (1981), Loot (1986), Electra (1999), and Awake and Sing! (2006), though she has yet to win.
Wanamaker received two BAFTA TV Award nominations for Best Actress for her roles in Prime Suspect (1991) and Love Hurts (1992–1994).
In 2001, she was appointed a CBE for her services to drama, an honor she accepted as a British citizen at Buckingham Palace.
