The Nairobi-Mombasa highway, a critical artery for trade and travel in Kenya, has over the years tragically become the site of numerous fatal accidents. Among the most devastating losses are those of several prominent businessmen from the Ukambani region, whose deaths have left deep voids in their communities and the wider business landscape. These entrepreneurs, each a titan in their own right, built legacies that extended far beyond their commercial ventures, and their untimely passing serves as a stark reminder of the perilous nature of this busy road.

Stephen Ngei Musyoka, the founder and CEO of Makindu Motors, was perhaps the most prominent figure among them. Known widely for distributing the popular Skygo motorcycles, Musyoka was a self-made entrepreneur who rose from humble beginnings as a second-hand clothes hawker to build one of Kenya’s most successful automobile assembly companies. He was widely regarded as a visionary who created numerous employment opportunities and inspired many aspiring entrepreneurs. In a devastating incident in June 2026, Musyoka and his wife, Giannaphina Mumbua Ngei, lost their lives in a road accident at Masimba along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway. The news sent shockwaves across Makueni County and the wider Ukambani region, with leaders like Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse paying emotional tributes to the couple. Kalonzo described Ngei as a close friend whose life story embodied the true spirit of a self-made entrepreneur, while MP Mutuse, who confirmed Ngei was his brother, noted the profound loss to the family and the business community.

Tragedy struck again on the highway in September 2025 with the death of Dennis Kasyoki, a wealthy Makueni businessman and philanthropist popularly known as “Nzou” or “Kimuma”. Kasyoki, a beloved figure from Mbooni, had built a reputation not just as a visionary entrepreneur but as a generous community supporter and a pillar of leadership. His death occurred in a grisly accident at Green Park, Athi River, near the Primarosa area. According to police reports, the incident happened at around 12:20 am on September 22, 2025. Kasyoki was driving a Ford Ranger when his vehicle collided with a Mercedes Actros trailer that was transporting a container of used shoes from Mombasa to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Investigators stated that Kasyoki overtook the trailer and cut in abruptly, leading to a collision where the trailer’s container toppled and landed on his vehicle. The news of his passing prompted an outpouring of grief from friends and leaders, who remembered him as a “true son of Mbooni” whose generosity and leadership touched countless lives.

Ithea Wamatwins, another popular Kamba businessman, met his end in a head-on collision along the highway in January 2023. The accident occurred at the Kenani area, approximately 30 kilometers from the Mtito Andei Police Station. Wamatwins was traveling in a Toyota Hilux driven by Rodgers Muia, which was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi when it attempted to overtake carelessly and collided with an oncoming Mahindra Scorpion. He was widely known and loved for his philanthropic activities, most notably his unwavering support for Kamba artists. His death was a significant blow to the local music industry, with singer Fortune Mwikali noting that he was a businessman who supported artists by a great deal and would be greatly missed.

Also in January 2023, the region lost Patrick Nziuki Mutinda, a well-known businessman who died in a grisly road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The accident, which occurred on a Sunday night, also left eight other people injured.

Earlier in March 2023, Pius Musembi Kivindu, a prominent 60-year-old businessman and land dealer from Athi River, perished in what was reported as a self-fatal accident. The incident occurred at around 6:00 am near the Mto Wa Mawe bridge at the Green Park area. According to the police report, Kivindu was driving towards Nairobi City Centre when he hit a road pavement, lost control of his vehicle, swerved to the left, hit a concrete electric post, and overturned. He sustained a deep cut on the forehead and died on the spot. However, the circumstances surrounding his death sparked controversy, with Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and other local leaders calling for a thorough police investigation into the incident.
