Nairobi County Police Commander, Japheth Koome while addressing the media on Monday denied claims of security officers killing unarmed civilians.

”Our mandate is to ensure life and property are protected at all costs without fear or favour. We have only used firearms on armed gangs that have been attacking Nairobi residents,” he said.

Koome in the same breath defended his officers who were accused of shooting an 8 year old girl in Nairobi’s Mathare area on Saturday.

The police boss said his officers had not hurt anyone but had taken control of the situation without using excessive force.

”My officers did not kill the girl. They were trailing an armed gangster who was firing in all directions and ended up shooting the girl.”

He termed the incident as ‘unfortunate.’

Stephanie Moraa was shot in the chest while playing on the balcony with other kids. Her aunt said that the young girl laid motionless on the floor.

Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet has also threatened to take legal action against journalists and media houses that reported on incidences of violence in Mathare on Sunday night.

The IG dismissed the claims saying that it was all ‘fake news.’

The police are investigating the source of the fake reports that also purported that there were attacks in Lucky Summer, Ruaraka.
