The Kenyan senate has suspended physical meetings for one month as part of efforts to contain the spread of coronavirus.

Senate Speaker Keneth Lusaka told the Standard that during the period all committee meetings will be held virtually as the house checks the spread of the virus.

“We had a liaison committee meeting, which has all the chairpersons of committees, and agreed that all meetings should be held virtually,” said Lusaka.

This comes days after the National Assembly banned physical meetings after a number of staffers and MPs contracted the virus.

The Council of Governors had written to Lusaka last week urging the Senate to embrace virtual meetings to avoid exposing them to coronavirus infections.

“We call upon the Speaker of the Senate to emulate the National Assembly, which has since dispensed with physical appearance.

“I urge all the governors to appear virtually as their health comes first,” said CoG chairman and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

This writer understands that the Speaker said that the governors’ appeal had merit as some of the county bosses were in the vulnerable group in terms of age or have other medical conditions.
