Oxfam International through its Executive Director Winnie Byanyima has announced that they will be moving their secretariat from Oxford to Nairobi, Kenya.

They say the move came from the need to be part of the society where they offer their help and to strengthen the southern voices within its decision making.

Ms.Bwanyima said that the move will begin in 2017 and is expected to take two years. She said that she has already signed a memorandum of understanding and a host country agreement with the President and the Foreign affairs cabinet secretary.

The executive director when speaking to The Civil Society said: “Our work is more now about supporting ordinary people – everywhere – to hold political decision-makers and corporates to account, so they can exercise their rights to a fair share of the benefits of economic, political and social development. It’s about linking ordinary people’s struggles and experiences, everywhere. We need to work more closely with citizens to overcome economic and political exclusion, which is the root cause of poverty.”

She however insisted that the move will not affect any of its affiliates.
