    Parliament To Approve Budget For Fresh Presidential Elections

    parliamentFollowing the announcement by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) of a fresh presidential poll set to take place on October 26, the Government of Kenya has been working to come up with a budget that would accommodate all necessary expenditure required for the fresh poll.

    During the August 8 election the IEBC used approximately Sh42 billion, however, the election was annulled by the Supreme Court over several illegalities and irregularities during the electoral process.

    According to reports the repeat poll between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga will receive Sh9.9 billion if the estimates tabled in the National Assembly and Treasury Ministry by CS Henry Rotich is approved by MPs.

    The IEBC commission had already budgeted for improvement of electoral technology, wages for polling officials, and election materials (ballot papers and transport) among the list of necessary items required to successfully conduct the election.

    Initially the electoral agency had requested for Sh12 bill but the cut back in budget has forced them to strategize how they can make the most of their budget.

    According to the IEBC Sh1.49 billion will go towards enhancement of technology, Sh2.39 billion will go to polling officials wages and Sh1.9 billion will be used on transport at the county level.

    The remainder of the budget will go towards election materials, training of polling officials, hiring of equipment and tall.

    Treasury has also asked to approved the budget for the free secondary education.
