policeIndependent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has said that some of the videos doing rounds online showing police frog marching and assaulting University of Nairobi students are fake.

The police are said to have beaten, raped some in their halls of residence on Thursday while protesting for the release of former student leader, Babu Owino.

”The analysis by IPOA’s investigations team has confirmed a significant number of video clips and photographs being circulated on social media purportedly relating to the alleged brutality meted on students are fake,” IPOA chairman Macharia Njeru said.

Mr Njeru has also said that the they have reason to believe that those behind the demonstrations are apparently outsiders and former students expelled from the institution of higher learning.

He however admitted that several students were indeed injured during the protests.

”There are genuine students who were indeed injured by some police officers as the demonstrators were allegedly pursued So far we have not received any evidence of fatality.”

A student is said to have succumbed to their injuries on Sunday but the UoN administration has denied the allegations.
