Jonny Gray Siblings: All About Megan and Richie Gray

Jonathan Douglas Gray, known as Jonny Gray, is a Scottish professional rugby union player born on 14 March 1994 in Rutherglen, Scotland.

He has represented Scotland at senior international level since making his debut in 2013 and has accumulated over 80 caps.

Gray began playing rugby as a child at Cambuslang RFC, progressing through the mini section from the age of seven to become a first XV regular by 16, while also playing for Calderglen High School in East Kilbride.

After developing through age-grade sides and a John Macphail Scholarship stint in New Zealand, he turned professional and established himself as a durable and high-work-rate forward.

Siblings

Jonny is the younger brother of fellow Scotland international lock Richie Gray, who is approximately five years older and has also earned British and Irish Lions honours.

The brothers grew up in the Glasgow area, where they competed in backyard games, and Jonny has often credited Richie as a role model for the professional discipline required in diet, training and mindset.

They became one of the pairs of brothers to represent Scotland, with Jonny making his Test debut as a replacement for Richie against South Africa in 2013; they later started together and even scored tries in the same match against Argentina.

Jonny also has a twin sister, Megan, who is nearly six feet tall and has worked for a law firm.

Career

Gray signed a professional contract with Glasgow Warriors in 2013 after academy experience and early senior appearances.

He became a key figure in the side that won the Pro12 title in the 2014–15 season and was named club captain at the age of 21 in late 2015, later serving in leadership roles.

He remained with Glasgow until 2020, making more than 100 appearances.

In 2020 he moved to Exeter Chiefs in England’s Premiership, where he contributed to the club’s Premiership and European Champions Cup double in the 2019–20 season (completed in 2020).

After a serious knee injury in 2023 that sidelined him for an extended period and led to an early exit from Exeter, he joined Bordeaux Bègles in the Top 14 for the 2024–25 campaign.

In March 2026 he transferred to USA Perpignan, initially on a short-term basis to help the club in its relegation battle, and later committed to remain there into the following season.

Internationally he progressed through Scotland Under-18 and Under-20 (which he captained), debuted for the senior team in November 2013, featured in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups, and has been a regular in Six Nations campaigns, noted for high tackle counts in several tournaments.

He returned to the national squad after injury absences and continued to add to his cap total into 2026.

Accolades

Gray’s major team honours include the Pro12 title with Glasgow Warriors in 2015, the Premiership title and European Champions Cup with Exeter Chiefs in 2020, and further European success associated with his later French clubs.

Individually he received the Sir Willie Purves Quaich as Scottish Young Player of the Year in 2014 (following in his brother’s footsteps) and was named Pro12 Young Player of the Year around the same period.

He has been recognised for defensive excellence, including leading or ranking highly in tackle statistics during Six Nations tournaments, and has earned more than 80 senior Scotland caps with multiple tries scored.
