Jubilee ‘Rebel’ MPs Suffer Setback in Push to Leave Azimio

Jubilee MPs who want to leave Azimio have suffered a setback as a result of the instructions given by Ann Nderitu, the Registrar of Political Parties.

The MPs who later announced their support for President William Ruto wrote to Nderitu on their decision to leave the coalition and a change in party leadership.

However, the registrar rejected their appeal on Tuesday and instructed them to exit the Raila Odinga-led coalition using the procedures outlined in the Azimio coalition agreement.

“With respect to exiting from the coalition political party, kindly observe the provisions of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance coalition agreement and the role of respective party organs,” Nderitu said.

The Azimio agreement stipulates that any party wishing to leave must give the Coalition Council, which is the second-highest decision-making body, a 90-day notice of their intention to do so.

This indicates that any attempt by a partner party to leave Azimio will be subject to approval by the council, which is presided over by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, head of the Jubilee Party.

The MPs’ attempts to replace the party leadership also failed because the registrar advised them to use the established party dispute resolution process.

“It is expected that the party shall update the office on the progress of the internal dispute resolution and disciplinary processes. You are further required to adhere to the provision of the party constitution as you undertake the said processes,” she added.

On February 10, the pro-Ruto Jubilee MPs informed Nderitu via deputy SG Joshua Kutuny that secretary general Jeremiah Kioni, vice chair David Murathe, and treasurer Kagwe Gichohi had been suspended.

The three were replaced by EALA MP Kanini Kega (acting SG), Rachel Nyamai, and Aden Keynan.

The National Executive Committee/Parliamentary Group meeting came up with the resolutions that Kioni has since dismissed.
