Democratic Party leader JB Muturi has demanded that Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen explain remarks he allegedly made concerning voter registration activities in Uganda linked to Kenya’s electoral process.
Muturi said the claims were serious and could raise questions about Kenya’s sovereignty and the integrity and independence of the country’s electoral process.
In a statement, the former Attorney General said Murkomen, as a senior Cabinet Secretary, should clarify whether he had knowledge of voter registration activities in Uganda connected to Kenya’s elections.
Muturi called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to summon Murkomen and require him to explain precisely what he meant by the remarks and identify the alleged activities.
“If credible evidence exists of unlawful voter registration or foreign interference in our electoral process, the matter must be investigated and those responsible held personally accountable in accordance with the law,” Muturi said.
He described the claims as a matter of grave national concern, arguing that allegations involving the electoral process should not be dismissed without scrutiny.
Muturi said Kenyans deserved clear answers on what was said, what evidence supports the claims and whether any threat to the integrity of the electoral process had occurred.
“Kenya’s sovereignty is not negotiable, and our elections cannot be compromised,” he said.
He urged the IEBC to act decisively and ensure transparency and accountability over the matter.
