Nairobi’s Kayole residents on Friday protested the killing of a garbage collector by the police.

While seeking justice for the deceased, the residents blocked roads and engaged the police in running battles. Bonfires were lit in the middle of roads, paralyzing transport for the better part of the morning.

Only last week, ten bodies were dumped at the city mortuary as a result of ‘mob justice,’ the police said.

But postmortem results showed that some were shot while others were hacked to death.

Opposition leaders are today (Friday) holding a fundraiser at the Laico Regency for demo victims. They have rubbished police claims that only 10 people have died, noting that over 50 people have died between 17 and 21 November.

“The NASA Principals, fraternity and friends will today be holding a fundraiser at the Laico Regency Hotel, Nairobi, to meet the funeral expenses of those who died from police brutality and extrajudicial killings between 17th and 21st November. The event starts at 6 p.m. All are welcome,” the statement read.

Calm is said to have returned to Kayole but police still patrolling the area.
