Police in Nyamira County launched investigations into the murder of a 53-year-old man whose body was found dumped and partially burnt in a banana plantation within his family compound.

The body of Mark Ondiek Otawa was discovered on August 27, in a banana plantation in Nyamira South Sub-County, two days after he was last seen leaving his home to pick tea.

Police officers visited the scene and established that the deceased was likely murdered elsewhere before his body was transported to the family land.

Investigators further established that the body had been set ablaze after being dumped at the scene.
The police said the head had suffered extensive injuries and was described as having been “totally dismantled”, while there was also a deep cut on the left shoulder.

Both legs had been extensively eaten, apparently by dogs, leaving the bones exposed.

A panga and a torch were recovered at the scene and taken as possible exhibits as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing.

Otawa was last seen alive at about 6am on August 27 when he left his home to go and pick tea.

His body was later discovered at about 4pm by his 14-year-old daughter, who was on her way to fetch vegetables.

The scene was processed and documented by Crime Scene Investigation officers from Nyamira as detectives began piecing together the circumstances surrounding the murder.

The body was subsequently moved to the Nyamira County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a postmortem examination.

Police have not indicated whether any arrests have been made, as investigations into the murder continue.

And police in Lamu East Sub-County are investigating an alleged murder reported in Kizingitini Village, where officers were forced to retreat after encountering a hostile group of youths armed with crude weapons.

The incident, involving a man identified as Malik Bawazir Bwamadi.

Police officers who proceeded to the reported scene were met by a group of angry youths who allegedly confronted them while armed with various crude weapons.

Attempts by the officers to calm the youths and gain access to the house to verify the report were unsuccessful, with the situation becoming increasingly volatile.

The officers were forced to withdraw to Kizingitini Police Station and requested reinforcement from Faza Police Station.

Upon arrival of the reinforcement team, officers returned to the reported scene and found the house locked from outside.

The area chief informed the officers that the alleged body had already been removed from the house and taken to an unknown location within the village.

Police were unable to establish the whereabouts of the body or immediately determine what had happened to Bwamadi.

Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported incident, locate the alleged body and determine whether a murder occurred.

Police officers remained on standby in the area as efforts to gather information and prevent any further escalation continued.
