sgrStandard Gauge Railways (SGR) ‘Madaraka Express’ fares will go up starting April as the government seeks to subsidize its operational costs.

Kenya Railways is seeking to have the promotional economy class fares adjusted to Sh1,200 from Sh700 as announced by President Uhuru Kenyatta during its launch in May.

Kenya Railways managing director Atanas Maina says that they are still waiting on the Ministry of Transport to approve of the new rates.

”The government made a deliberate decision to charge low fare to allow Kenyans from all walks of life to test the service at inception stage so that they can judge for themselves the nature of the product we were introducing to the market,” Mr Maina told the Nation.
