    Early Life

Born in 1954 in Patna, Bihar, Anil Agarwal grew up in a business-oriented family. His father ran a small aluminum conductor business, which influenced his early interest in the metals industry. Instead of pursuing higher education, he moved to Mumbai at the age of 19 to seek business opportunities.

Agarwal started his entrepreneurial journey in 1976 when he founded Sterlite Industries, a company specializing in cable and industrial products. Over the next decade, he expanded his operations and, in 1986, took a major step by establishing Vedanta Resources, which would later become one of the most powerful names in the global mining industry.

    Vedanta Resources and Global Expansion

Under Anil Agarwal’s leadership, Vedanta Resources became the first Indian company to be listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2003. Today, the corporation has a significant presence in India, Africa, and Australia, dominating the production of key metals such as zinc, aluminum, copper, and iron ore.

Despite his immense wealth, Anil Agarwal has been a committed philanthropist. In 2014, he joined The Giving Pledge, an initiative started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, where billionaires commit to donating a majority of their wealth to charitable causes. Agarwal pledged to give away 75% of his fortune, which amounts to approximately $2.5 billion, towards social causes in India.

He has also contributed significantly to educational and healthcare initiatives, including plans to establish Vedanta University in Odisha, India, which aims to provide world-class education to students from across the country.

    Personal Life

Nicknamed The Metal King, Anil Agarwal resides in London with his wife and two children. His business acumen, risk-taking ability, and vision have transformed him into one of India’s most influential industrialists.
