Parallel parking can be challenging, especially in tight spaces or busy streets. However, with the right technique and a little practice, you can park smoothly and confidently. The key to successful parallel parking is positioning, steering control, and patience. Here is how to parallel park.

    Finding the Right Spot

Choose a parking space that is at least one and a half times the length of your vehicle. Make sure the area is legal for parking and free from obstructions like fire hydrants or driveways.

    Positioning Your Car

    1. Pull up alongside the car in front of the space – Align your car so it is parallel to the parked car beside you, about two to three feet away. Your rear bumper should be roughly aligned with theirs.
    2. Check your surroundings – Look for pedestrians, cyclists, or other cars. Turn on your signal to indicate you’re parking.

    Starting the Parking Maneuver

    1. Turn your steering wheel fully to the right – Shift into reverse and begin backing up slowly while keeping the wheel turned. Your car will begin to angle into the space.
    2. Align with the back car’s front bumper – When your car is at about a 45-degree angle, straighten the wheel slightly and continue reversing.
    3. Turn the wheel left to straighten out – Once your front bumper clears the parked car ahead, turn the wheel left to bring your car fully into the space.

    Adjusting Your Position

If needed, move forward and backward slightly to center your car within the space. Make sure you’re not too close to the curb or sticking out into traffic.

    Final Checks

    • Your car should be about 6-12 inches from the curb.
    • Ensure there’s enough space in front and behind for other cars to move.
    • Put the car in park, engage the handbrake, and turn off your signal.
