The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered Sh12.46 million from Kimonge Geoffrey, a former political advisor to ex-Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu.

In a statement, EACC revealed that Kimonge fraudulently acquired the funds by applying for imprest to finance non-existent activities while serving in the county government.

Voi Chief Magistrate Mildred Obura ruled that Kimonge had unlawfully enriched himself with public funds, violating procurement and financial regulations.

The court ordered him to repay Sh12,458,990 plus interest at commercial rates from the date he obtained the funds.

EACC began investigating Kimonge in August 2020 after receiving complaints that he had misappropriated Sh13.9 million in imprest, allegedly for allowances meant for county assembly ward representatives and staff.

However, investigations established that the claimed activities were fictitious, and the funds were never used for their intended purpose.

EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud confirmed that the commission filed the case against Kimonge in 2022 after gathering sufficient evidence.

“The commission welcomes the court’s decision and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that stolen public resources are recovered and returned to the people of Kenya,” EACC said in its statement.
