Alecia Kaorie “Sug” Sutton is an American professional basketball player currently playing as a guard for the Washington Mystics of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

Known for her quickness, playmaking ability, and resilience, Sutton earned her nickname “Sug”—short for “Sugar”—from her father and grandfather, reflecting her dynamic presence both on and off the court.

Raised by parents Larry Sutton and Tonette Moore in a sports-loving household, she honed her skills at Parkway North High School before starring at the University of Texas.

Drafted 36th overall by the Mystics in the 2020 WNBA Draft, Sutton has navigated a challenging yet inspiring career path, marked by perseverance and a return to the league after stints overseas.

Beyond basketball, she’s an entrepreneur with her clothing line, Sug Sutton Apparel, showcasing her multifaceted talents.

    Siblings

Sutton has two sisters, Alexis, who is 33 years old and their middle sister Atlantis, who is 27 years old.

However, not much is known about Alexis and Atlantis including their personal lives or career pursuits as they lead a private life compared to their famous sister.

    Career

Sutton first gained attention at Parkway North High School, where she was ranked the No. 6 prospect nationally by espnW HoopGurlz, though a senior-year ACL tear cut her high school tenure short.

At the University of Texas from 2016 to 2020, she blossomed into a standout combo guard, starting 65 of 131 games and earning accolades for her scoring and playmaking.

Turning pro in 2020, she debuted with the Washington Mystics, scoring her first WNBA points against the Atlanta Dream, but faced roster cuts and waivers early on.

After playing overseas in Poland and other leagues, Sutton’s breakthrough came in 2023 with the Phoenix Mercury, where she signed a training camp contract and secured a roster spot.

That year, she averaged 8.2 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.6 rebounds, highlighted by a historic triple-double (18 points, 11 rebounds, 11 assists) against the Las Vegas Aces—the first in Mercury history.

Traded back to the Mystics in 2024, she continues to contribute as a depth guard, balancing WNBA play with overseas stints.

    Accolades

Sutton’s achievements span her amateur and professional careers, reflecting her talent and determination.

    In college at Texas, she earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors in 2019 and Second-Team All-Big 12 in 2020, alongside a Big 12 All-Tournament Team nod in 2019.

She capped her Longhorns tenure with 1,091 career points (39th in program history) and 419 assists (tied for ninth), plus Academic All-Big 12 recognition for her studies in health promotion and behavioral sciences.

As a high schooler, she was a Naismith Second-Team All-American in 2016 despite her injury-shortened season.

Professionally, her 2023 triple-double with the Phoenix Mercury stands as a landmark achievement, marking her as a franchise trailblazer.

While her WNBA stats through 2024—429 points, 261 assists, and 138 rebounds across 81 games—show a solid foundation, her journey suggests more accolades await.
