The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) has arrested three suspects and confiscated 52 shisha bongs following a crackdown on two popular clubs in Nairobi.
The Friday night operation, led by NACADA’s Director of Enforcement and Compliance, James Koskey, targeted Alfakheer Lounge on Mirema Drive and Embassy Club along Thika Road, both accused of violating the government’s ban on shisha use.
At Alfakheer Lounge, officers seized 10 shisha bongs and arrested one suspect. At Embassy Club, the team recovered 42 bongs, 56 assorted shisha flavors, and took two individuals into custody.
Speaking after the raid, Koskey reaffirmed NACADA’s commitment to eliminating shisha use, citing its severe health risks.
“Shisha is not only illegal but also harmful, causing addiction and serious respiratory diseases. We will continue to conduct these operations to protect public health and ensure compliance with the law,” he said.
The latest crackdown comes amid growing concerns over the resurgence of shisha use despite a 2017 ban prohibiting its manufacture, sale, importation, and consumption.
NACADA has intensified enforcement efforts, conducting a series of raids across the capital.
Earlier this month, 30 shisha bongs were seized in a Westlands club, and 15 more were confiscated in Kilimani, leading to multiple arrests.
Authorities have warned that establishments found violating the ban risk closure and legal action.
NACADA has urged the public to report any businesses engaging in shisha trade through its toll-free helpline, 1192.
