Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Saturday met with Tanzanian opposition leaders who paid him a courtesy call to discuss democracy and governance in the region.
In a statement shared on social media, Odinga said the talks focused on strengthening democracy across Africa and the role of both ruling and opposition parties in promoting national development.
He urged the opposition leaders, led by Tundu Lissu, to prioritize dialogue and constructive engagement with the government for the sake of national unity and the preservation of democracy in Tanzania.
“I look forward to a peaceful and transparent election in the upcoming Tanzanian polls,” Odinga stated.
Tanzania is set to hold its general elections in October 2025, where both presidential and parliamentary seats will be contested.
In January 2025, the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), endorsed incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan as its candidate for re-election.
