Ministry Of Defence To Auction Ex-Military Vehicles, Equipment

The Ministry of Defence has announced an upcoming public auction of ex-military vehicles, equipment, and general stores.

The auction will be conducted on an “as-is, where-is” basis, meaning items will be sold in their current condition without warranties.

Viewing of the auctioned items will be open to the public starting April 7, 2025, on weekdays only, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The locations for viewing include DEFOD-Kahawa, 12 Engineers-Thika, and 23 OCC-Lanet in the Nairobi region; 43 OCC-Nanyuki in the Nanyuki region; and Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe and Mariakani Garrison in the Coastal region.

According to a notice issued on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, by the Head of Supply Chain Management, catalogues containing full details of the items can be obtained from designated offices during the viewing period.

The catalogues are available at Ulinzi House (Lenana Road), 23 OCC-Lanet, 43 OCC-Nanyuki, KNB Mtongwe, and DEFOD-Kahawa upon payment of a non-refundable fee of Sh1,000 per set.

To participate in the auction, interested bidders must pay a refundable deposit of Sh50,000 for vehicles and equipment and Sh30,000 for general stores.

The payment should be made to the Ministry of Defence before the last day of viewing. Each bid number will be valid for only one lot.

Entry to the auction will require bidders to present their original catalogue and receipts for both the catalogue and bid number deposit.

The public auction will take place on April 29 at Kenya Navy Base Mtongwe, followed by May 6 at 43 OCC Nanyuki, May 13 at 23 OCC Lanet, and May 20 at DEFOD Kahawa. All auctions will begin at 10:00 am.

“All successful bidders will be required to pay a deposit of 25% of the bid at the fall of the hammer and the remaining balance within fourteen (14) days after the auction, failure to which the award will be cancelled and the deposit forfeited,” the notice reads.

All items must be collected within 30 days after full payment. A storage fee of 1% of the bid price per day will be charged for any delay, up to a maximum of three months, after which uncollected items will be forfeited along with any payments made.

Bidders who purchase motor vehicles must repaint them in non-military colors before putting them on the road.

“No EX – Military vehicle should be put on the road with EX – Military number plates contrary to which the vehicle will be impounded immediately.”

Additionally, successful bidders will be responsible for paying duties, VAT, and other applicable charges as per government regulations.

All bidders must obtain clearance from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) before collecting their items from the auction yards.

The Ministry of Defence has set a reserve price for the items and reserves the right to reject any bid below this price without providing reasons.
