Former Attorney General and Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has come out strongly against President William Ruto, just days after being dismissed from the Cabinet.
In a candid TV interview on Friday, Muturi claimed Ruto is unfit to lead the country and accused him of running a dishonest government.
“I have sadly come to the conclusion that William Ruto is unfit to serve as President of the Republic of Kenya,” said Muturi. “I say this with no bitterness.”
Muturi alleged that the President behaves differently in public compared to how he operates behind closed doors.
“He acts in two different ways—one when addressing the public and another when making decisions in office,” Muturi claimed.
He went on to describe Ruto’s policies as harmful to Kenyans and accused him of being “irredeemably corrupt.”
Muturi also accused the President of being behind the controversial airport and energy deals involving India’s Adani Group, which triggered public outrage last year. Under the proposed Sh300 billion deal, Adani was to build a second runway and upgrade the terminal at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in exchange for a 30-year lease.
The deal, which bypassed open tendering, was halted after legal challenges and a public outcry. President Ruto later ordered its cancellation, citing new information from investigative agencies.
Another deal between Adani and the Ministry of Energy worth Sh110 billion for power transmission lines was also cancelled by the President. Despite his decision to cancel the projects, Muturi insisted Ruto had supported the deals from the beginning.
“Whenever he introduces a program, it’s never about service—it’s about making money for himself,” said Muturi.
In April 2, 2025, Muturi dismissed Ruto’s claims that he was fired for skipping Cabinet meetings, saying the real reason was his vocal criticism of extrajudicial killings in the country. He revealed that his own son was among the victims of abductions during the Gen Z protests.
He said he had raised the issue through public statements and private letters to the President, urging the government to take action.
“I felt that attending Cabinet meetings while such a grave issue was being ignored would be a betrayal of our constitutional values,” Muturi said. He wrote to the President in January explaining his absence, but never received a reply.
Muturi noted that despite President Ruto’s public promise to address the matter in Homa Bay in December 2024, the Cabinet never discussed it during any of the three meetings held this year.
In response, President Ruto, speaking during a interview on March, 31 at Sagana State Lodge, defended his decision to fire Muturi. He said Muturi failed to deliver in both roles—first as Attorney General and later as a Cabinet Secretary.
“When I first appointed him as AG, he told me he might struggle because he hadn’t practiced law in a long time,” Ruto said. “I persuaded him to take the job. But when I saw he was struggling, I reassigned him.”
Ruto accused Muturi of going on strike by refusing to attend Cabinet meetings. “You are a minister, but you’re on strike—what was I supposed to do?” he asked.
Ruto described Muturi as a longtime friend and campaign ally and said he had given him a second chance, which he wasted.
“I tried to support him, but in the end, he dismissed himself,” Ruto said. “But it’s not the end of the road—he has a good pension as a former Speaker, so he’ll be fine.”
