    Early Career Life

Born Frederick Jay Rubin on March 10, 1963, in Long Beach, New York, Rick’s passion for music began in high school, where he formed a punk band and started experimenting with recording equipment. During his senior year, he founded Def Jam Recordings using his school’s four-track recorder.

In 1984, Rubin officially launched Def Jam in partnership with Russell Simmons while attending New York University. The label became a cultural powerhouse, producing early hip-hop classics for Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, and Run-DMC. Rubin’s ability to blend rap and rock, as seen in Run-DMC and Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way,” helped introduce hip-hop to mainstream audiences.

    Creating a Production Empire

Rubin eventually parted ways with Def Jam and moved to Los Angeles, where he launched Def American Recordings, later renamed American Recordings. Here, he shifted focus to rock and country, producing for Johnny Cash, Tom Petty, Nine Inch Nails, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. With the Chili Peppers alone, Rubin is credited with selling over 80 million albums.

His 2006 work on the Chili Peppers’ Stadium Arcadium earned him a Grammy Award for Producer of the Year. Over the years, Rubin has received nine Grammys from 18 nominations and is widely regarded as a genre-bending genius.

    Stints at Major Labels

In 2007, Rubin was appointed co-head of Columbia Records, where he produced Grammy-winning projects including Adele’s 21, Metallica’s Death Magnetic, and albums by Neil Diamond and Green Day. He left Columbia in 2012 and revived American Recordings under Republic Records, releasing music from ZZ Top and The Avett Brothers.

    Rick Rubin’s Real Estate Portfolio

Rick Rubin’s wealth extends beyond music into a vast and eclectic real estate portfolio. In 1992, he purchased a $2 million mansion above the Sunset Strip and soon after acquired the now-famous “haunted” house in Laurel Canyon, known as The Mansion, which doubled as a studio for major bands like Audioslave, Slipknot, and Maroon 5.

In Malibu, he owns multiple properties — though two were destroyed during the 2018 Woolsey Fire. One of his crown jewels is Shangri La, a historic music estate he bought in 2011. Previously used by Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr, Shangri La has since been transformed by Rubin into a pristine creative space with ongoing renovations and a repainted white finish for a constant “fresh” look.

    Book, Personal Life

In January 2023, Rick published The Creative Act: A Way of Being, a book that reflects his spiritual, philosophical approach to creativity and life.

Rubin is married to Mourielle Hurtado Herrera, a former actress and model, and together they have a son named Ra. A longtime fan of professional wrestling, Rubin once financed Smoky Mountain Wrestling and even drew inspiration from wrestling personas when shaping the Beastie Boys’ rebellious image.
