Ross Duffer, born on February 15, 1984, in Durham, North Carolina, is an American television writer, director, and producer renowned for his contributions to the entertainment industry.

He has carved out a significant presence in modern television, most notably as the co-creator of the Netflix science fiction horror series Stranger Things.

Raised in a supportive family environment that nurtured his creative passions, Ross developed an early obsession with filmmaking, sparked by a Hi8 video camera gifted by his parents in third grade.

He attended the Duke School for Children and Charles E. Jordan High School before pursuing formal education in film at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, graduating in 2007.

    Siblings

Ross’ closest sibling and professional partner is his identical twin brother, Matt Duffer, born on the same day, February 15, 1984.

The twins share an exceptionally close bond, having grown up together in Durham, North Carolina, where they fostered their love for filmmaking from a young age.

Their collaborative dynamic began in childhood, creating homemade feature-length films, including an adaptation of the card game Magic: The Gathering.

    Career

Duffer’s career is inextricably linked with that of his brother Matt, as the Duffer Brothers have built a prolific portfolio as writers, directors, and producers.

Their journey began with short films, starting with We All Fall Down in 2005, followed by titles such as The Milkman (2008), Abraham’s Boys (2009), and Vessel (2012), where they honed their skills in writing, directing, and editing.

Their first major break came with the 2015 horror film Hidden, which they wrote and directed, catching the attention of industry figures like M. Night Shyamalan.

This led to their involvement as writers and executive producers on the Fox series Wayward Pines (2015–2016).

However, their career-defining moment arrived in 2016 with the premiere of Stranger Things, a Netflix series they created, directed, and executive produced.

Set in 1980s Indiana, the show pays homage to the era’s pop culture, drawing inspiration from filmmakers like Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter, and authors like Stephen King.

The series’ success propelled the brothers to international fame, leading to the establishment of their production company, Upside Down Pictures, in 2022, which has an overall deal with Netflix.

Through this company, they are developing projects like a live-action adaptation of Death Note, a series based on Stephen King and Peter Straub’s The Talisman, and a new Netflix show, The Boroughs, a supernatural drama set in a New Mexico retirement community.

    Accolades

Duffer, alongside his brother Matt, has garnered significant recognition for their work, particularly for Stranger Things.

The Duffer Brothers have been nominated six times for Primetime Emmy Awards, reflecting their critical acclaim in the industry.

They have won numerous prestigious awards, including the American Film Institute Award, MTV Movie & TV Award, Producers Guild of America Award, People’s Choice Award, and Saturn Award, celebrating their contributions to television and film.

Additional accolades include the NME Award, Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award, Dragon Award, and three Fangoria Chainsaw Awards, underscoring their dominance in the horror and sci-fi genres.

They also received a Critics’ Choice Television Award and a Guild of Music Supervisors Award, highlighting their ability to integrate music and storytelling effectively, as seen with the resurgence of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill in Stranger Things Season 4.

The brothers have earned nominations for high-profile honors such as the Golden Globe Award, British Academy Television Award, Hugo Award, Bram Stoker Award, Teen Choice Awards, Satellite Award, and Writers Guild of America Award.

In 2017, they were honored with the Alumni Achievement Award from Chapman University, recognizing their impact as graduates.
