Gunmen struck a village in Banisa constituency, Mandera County and killed six people including a six month old baby.

Police said the incident happened in Malkamari Division, near the Muruthow area of Banisa constituency in Mandera County.

Four other people were injured in the attack on Wednesday night.

Police linked the attack to inter clan fighting in the area over among others resources.

The victims belonged to the same extended family, all from a single household, underscoring the heartbreaking magnitude of the tragedy.

This, according to police, was a retaliation to a similar attack that had happened last week where three people were killed.

The attack occurred between Choroqo and Malkamari around midnight when gunmen targeted the family.

Those killed were identified as Kheira Muhumed Abdirahman, 38, Abdifatah Haji Issack Hassan, (4), Imran Haji Issack, (3), Aisha Haji Issack, (6 months), Halima Abdi Guhad, (42) and Kheira Mohamed Muhumed, (8).

Tension remained high on Thursday in the area amid security mobilization to calm the situation.

Local leaders rushed to the area and resorted to the social media to urge for calm the tension.

Police said no arrest had been made but an investigation is ongoing.

The injured were taken to a local hospital with serious wounds.

Police said the victims were shot at by rifles.

Other locals said delayed communication due to poor network coverage in the area hampered early reports from the scene, officials said.

Nominated Member of Parliament Suleka Hulbaale condemned the brutal attack that took place in the area.

She termed the incident a senseless act of violence and called for swift investigations and justice for the affected families.

Hulbaale urged security agencies to step up operations in the region to prevent further attacks and protect innocent civilians.

She also called on community leaders to work together to promote peace and reconciliation.

Inter clan fighting is common in the region and resources are usually at the center of the fighting.

Locals took to the social media to condemn the attack.
