Trade and Industry Cabinet Secretary Lee Kinyanjui has officially gazetted 70 new trade inspectors.

The announcement was made in a Gazette Notice dated May 16, 2025, and is in line with Section 13 (1) of the Standards Act.

These inspectors will work under key regulatory bodies such as the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) and the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), with the main role of ensuring that imported and exported goods comply with Kenya’s trade, safety and health standards.

At KEBS, inspectors are expected to carry out checks on imported goods to ensure they meet the country’s quality requirements.

Their responsibilities include conducting pre-shipment and on-arrival inspections, collecting samples for lab testing, and verifying that goods align with existing Kenya Standards.

At KEPHIS, the inspectors will be responsible for ensuring that plants and plant products entering or leaving the country meet international phytosanitary regulations. This includes inspecting sea containers to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
