A hickey, also known as a love bite, is a bruise caused by suction on the skin. While it usually results from kissing or sucking by another person, some people try to give themselves a hickey for fun, curiosity, or personal reasons. If you choose to do this, it’s important to know how the process works and how to do it safely. Here is how to give yourself a hickey.

    1. Understand What a Hickey Is
A hickey forms when small blood vessels under the skin, called capillaries, break due to suction. Blood leaks into the surrounding tissue, causing a reddish or purple mark that may last several days. It usually fades like any other bruise.
    2. Choose the Right Spot
Pick a soft, fleshy area where the skin is sensitive and has good blood flow. Common spots include the inner arm, the upper shoulder, or the side of the neck. Make sure the skin is clean and free from irritation before starting.
    3. Create Suction with Your Mouth
Form your lips into a tight circle and press them firmly against the chosen spot. Suck in strongly for about 20 to 30 seconds. Avoid biting or using your teeth, as this can cause pain or damage the skin.
    4. Use a Small Round Object (Optional Method)
If using your mouth feels awkward, you can try using an object like a bottle cap or a lipstick lid. Place the open end against your skin and suck the air out gently to create suction. Hold it for 30 seconds to one minute.
    5. Check the Mark and Repeat if Needed
After removing your mouth or object, check if the skin has darkened. If it hasn’t formed a visible mark, wait a few minutes and try again. Avoid repeating too many times in one spot, as this could cause pain or swelling.
    6. Be Gentle and Avoid Injury
Don’t overdo the suction or hold it for too long. Over-suction can break too many capillaries and lead to serious bruising or skin damage. If the skin feels sore or irritated, stop immediately.
    7. Know the Risks and Effects
A self-given hickey may not look very natural. People might notice and ask questions. Also, it may take days to fade, and like any bruise, it can be uncomfortable. Make sure you’re okay with these effects before attempting it.
