Pavel Valeryevich Datsyuk, born on July 20, 1978, in Sverdlovsk, Soviet Union, is widely regarded as one of the greatest ice hockey players of his generation.
Nicknamed the “Magic Man” for his extraordinary stickhandling, creativity, and defensive prowess, Datsyuk carved out a remarkable career primarily with the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 2001 to 2016.
His ability to dazzle opponents with his puck-handling skills while excelling as a two-way player made him a fan favorite and a respected figure in the hockey world.
Beyond the NHL, Datsyuk also played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) and represented Russia on the international stage, earning a place in the prestigious Triple Gold Club.
Siblings
Pavel grew up in Sverdlovsk alongside his sister, Larisa Datsyuk.
However, information about Larisa is scarce, as she has largely remained out of the public eye, and there is no record of her pursuing a career in hockey or any other high-profile profession.
Career
Datsyuk’s hockey career began in the Russian Superleague with teams like Spartak Yekaterinburg and Dynamo Yekaterinburg, where his exceptional skills were evident despite his smaller stature.
Often overlooked by scouts due to his size, Datsyuk’s breakthrough came under the guidance of Olympic trainer Vladimir Krikunov, who recognized his intelligence and vision, particularly during soccer games, which translated to his hockey development.
His talent caught the attention of Detroit Red Wings scout Håkan Andersson, leading to his selection in the sixth round (171st overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft.
Datsyuk debuted with the Red Wings in the 2001-02 season, contributing to their Stanley Cup victory that year.

Mentored by Russian stars like Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov, as well as captain Steve Yzerman, he quickly established himself as a dynamic player.
Over 14 NHL seasons, all with Detroit, Datsyuk played 953 games, scoring 314 goals and 604 assists for 918 points, with a plus-minus of +249.
His defensive excellence and offensive flair made him one of the league’s premier two-way forwards.
Key moments include his role in the 2002 and 2008 Stanley Cup championships, where his playmaking and defensive contributions were pivotal.
In 2008, he recorded a hat-trick in the Western Conference Finals against Dallas, helping Detroit advance to the Finals.
After leaving the NHL in 2016, Datsyuk returned to Russia, playing for SKA Saint Petersburg in the KHL, where he won the Gagarin Cup in 2017.
His international career was equally illustrious, representing Russia in five Olympic Games (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018), captaining the team in 2014 and 2018, and winning a gold medal in 2018.
He also secured a World Championship title in 2012 and bronze medals in 2005 and 2016.
Accolades
In the NHL, Datsyuk won the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward three consecutive years (2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10), a testament to his ability to neutralize opponents while contributing offensively.
He also claimed the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and performance four consecutive times (2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09), becoming one of only two players, alongside Ron Francis, to win both the Selke and Lady Byng.
In 2007-08, he earned the Bud Light Plus-Minus Award with a +41 rating.
Datsyuk was named to the NHL All-Star Game multiple times, though a hip injury prevented his participation in 2009.
His 2018 Olympic gold medal made him a member of the Triple Gold Club, an elite group of players who have won a Stanley Cup, an Olympic gold medal, and a World Championship.
In 2017, Datsyuk was honored as one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” by the NHL, a rare distinction for an active player at the time.
His induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2024 and the Russian Hockey Hall of Fame in 2025 cemented his legacy as a global hockey icon.
In the KHL, his 2017 Gagarin Cup victory with SKA Saint Petersburg added to his remarkable resume.
