    Seven more bodies exhumed, 54 body parts recovered at Kwa Binzaro, Kilifi

    At least seven more bodies were exhumed at Kwa Binzaro village in Kilifi county, with an additional 54 body parts collected scattered across the forest.

    This increased to 31, the number of bodies so far exhumed from the scene.

    Speaking at the scene, government pathologist Richard Njoroge indicated that the bodies had not fully decomposed, with a possibility of wild animals digging up some of the shallow graves.

    Human rights activists have called on the government to give an assurance of protection to the locals who could give more information regarding investigations of religious extremism. Thirty-two bodies have so far been exhumed over the last six days.

    “We have noted that at this particular site the bodies look a bit fresh. They are not fully skeletonized and like last week. The bodies we exhumed last week were full skeletons with no flesh. But the bodies we found here look to have been buried a few months or weeks ago,” said Dr. Njoroge.

    “This is a clear indication that this act is still active and a proactive measure needs to be employed by the government and the stakeholders so that we can have this disaster managed,” activist Walid Sketty noted.

    Police had on Monday arrested 11 people, including one woman believed to be the owner of the land where homicide detectives had mapped out 27 graves. Preliminary investigations indicated that some of the victims had earlier been rescued from Shakahola Forest, which borders Kwa Binzaro village.

    Some 20 graves have so far been exhumed. The exercise will continue on Thursday.

    This comes amid ongoing prosecution of suspects over the Shakahola massacre where at least 400 bodies were exhumed.
