LaVar Christopher Ball, born on October 23, 1967, in Los Angeles, California, is an American businessman, former athlete, and media personality.

He grew up in a sports-oriented environment, excelling in both basketball and football during his high school years at Canoga Park High School.

Ball’s larger-than-life persona catapulted him into the national spotlight in 2017, primarily through his provocative comments about NBA stars and his sons’ budding careers, turning the Ball family into a household name synonymous with ambition and controversy.

Despite facing criticism for his brash style, his influence on modern youth basketball and family-driven success stories remains undeniable, especially as he navigates personal health challenges, including a recent foot amputation.

    Siblings

LaVar is considered the middle child of his family. He has four brothers, named LaFrance, LaValle, LaRenzo, and LaShon, as well as two sisters.

LaVar’s family roots trace back to his upbringing in Los Angeles, but detailed public information about his own siblings remains sparse.

    Career

Ball’s athletic journey began in earnest at Canoga Park High School, where he shone as a quarterback in football and a forward in basketball.

Transitioning to college, he focused on basketball at West Los Angeles College, where he etched his name in the record books by grabbing 316 rebounds in a single season in 1985—a feat that remains a school benchmark.

He later transferred to Washington State University, averaging 2.2 points and contributing modestly over 26 games, before briefly attending Cal State Los Angeles.

Despite his basketball promise, Ball pivoted back to football after college, playing tight end at Long Beach City College and earning a spot on the New York Jets’ practice squad as a defensive end in 1994.

His professional football stint peaked with a loan to the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football in 1995, where he recorded 28 yards on kick returns, though injuries sidelined him from regular play with the Jets and Carolina Panthers, effectively ending his gridiron days without a single NFL game appearance.

Retiring from sports due to injury, Ball relocated to California and launched a career as a personal trainer, honing his expertise in fitness and youth development.

This foundation proved pivotal when, in 2016, he channeled his entrepreneurial energy into co-founding Big Baller Brand (BBB), a sports apparel company designed to outfit his sons and challenge industry giants like Nike with bold, family-centric designs.

The brand’s launch coincided with his rising media presence, amplified by a reality TV series, Ball in the Family, which debuted on Facebook Watch in 2017 and chronicled the family’s highs and lows.

Seeking to disrupt traditional basketball pipelines, Ball founded the Junior Basketball Association (JBA) in 2018 as an alternative to college hoops, offering high school prospects salaries and direct NBA pathways, though the league folded after one season amid financial and logistical hurdles.

Throughout, Ball’s career evolved from athlete to trainer to mogul, marked by savvy self-promotion that turned personal controversies—such as public feuds with figures like Donald Trump over his son LiAngelo’s 2017 shoplifting detention in China—into fuel for the family’s visibility.
