A 40-year-old man allegedly killed his five-year-old daughter before taking his own life in Gatundu North, Kiambu County.

Police said the incident occurred at a homestead in Kamwangi on Friday night and was discovered by one of the man’s other children on Saturday morning.

Police said Benson Njuguna Njogu had on August 6 accused his wife of infidelity, assaulted her and threatened to kill her.

The woman reportedly fled their home and sought refuge at a neighbour’s house, leaving behind their three children— aged 20, 10 and five.

Police said that on Friday at about 7pm, Njogu went to the neighbour’s home and pleaded with his wife to return, promising to forgive her. She declined to accompany him.

On Saturday at about 7am, the girl reportedly woke up and discovered the body of her five-year-old sister, hanging from a string inside a bedroom.

Police visited the scene and found the child dead.

The suspect was later found hanging about 100 metres from his home, in what police said appeared to be suicide.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the family had been experiencing domestic problems.

Crime Scene Investigation officers from Thika West processed the two scenes before the bodies were removed to General Kago Hospital Mortuary pending postmortem examinations.

Police have launched further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the child and the subsequent death of her father.

And 37-year-old man died after he was allegedly assaulted during a dispute over a debt in Kapsengere, Nandi South Sub-County.

The incident occurred at Gavinor Village in Kapsengere Sub-location, Terik Location, after the deceased, identified as Douglas Mayoya Ohenya, allegedly went to the home of a 48-year-old man to demand repayment of a debt.

Police said Ohenya arrived at the suspect’s home at about 11.30pm, where a disagreement reportedly erupted between the two men before turning into a physical fight.

The deceased was allegedly seriously assaulted and sustained severe head injuries and multiple fractures.

Neighbours reportedly intervened and rescued him before he was rushed to Mugoma Hospital Majengo, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police officers from Gambogi Police Station and Kapsengere Police Post were later called to the scene after a report that a mob had gathered and wanted to attack the suspect.

The officers rescued and arrested the suspect, identified as David Mundia Egay, a 48-year-old man.

Officers from Kapkerer Police Station and DCI Nandi South also visited the scene as investigations commenced.

The deceased’s body was transferred to Vihiga Funeral Home for preservation pending a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
