Treach was born Anthony Shawn Criss on December 2, 1970, in East Orange, New Jersey. He grew up alongside his younger brother, Diesel, who later became a member of the hip-hop group Rottin Razkals. In 1986, Treach co-founded The New Style with DJ Kay Gee and Vin Rock. Their debut album, Independent Leaders (1989), caught the attention of Queen Latifah, who began mentoring the group. Soon after, they rebranded as Naughty by Nature, a name that would become legendary in hip-hop.
