The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) in South Africa provides financial support to workers who have lost their jobs, are on maternity leave, or cannot work due to illness. In some cases, employers or employees may need to cancel UIF contributions or stop a UIF claim. Whether you are an employer who no longer needs to contribute or an individual who wishes to end your claim, it’s important to follow the correct procedure to cancel UIF properly.
- Understand When to Cancel UIF
You may need to cancel UIF for several reasons. Employers cancel UIF contributions when an employee resigns, retires, or passes away. Individuals may also need to cancel UIF if they have found new employment or no longer qualify for benefits. Cancelling UIF ensures that your records with the Department of Employment and Labour remain accurate.
- Cancelling UIF as an Employer
If you are an employer, you must cancel an employee’s UIF registration as soon as they leave your employment. This helps avoid penalties and keeps your records up to date with the UIF.
- Log in to the uFiling portal at www.ufiling.labour.gov.za.
- Go to the Employee Management section.
- Select the employee whose UIF registration you wish to cancel.
- Choose Terminate Employment or End Service, and enter the employee’s last working day and reason for termination.
- Submit the update to the UIF system.
The system will automatically adjust your monthly UIF contributions to exclude the terminated employee.
- Cancelling UIF as an Individual
If you are an individual who has been receiving UIF payments and you have started a new job, you must inform the Department of Employment and Labour to stop your claim.
- Visit your nearest Department of Labour office.
- Bring your ID, UIF reference number, and any documents related to your previous claim.
- Inform the officer that you want to cancel your UIF claim because you are employed again or no longer eligible.
The official will update your record and stop future UIF payments. Failing to do so could lead to penalties or repayment of overpaid funds.
- Cancelling a UIF Registration as a Business
If your business has permanently closed or no longer employs any workers, you must cancel your UIF registration.
- Log in to your uFiling profile.
- Go to the Employer Management section.
- Select Deregister Business or Cancel UIF Account.
- Provide the reason for cancellation and the date your business stopped operating.
- Submit the request and wait for confirmation from the UIF department.
Alternatively, you can write to the Department of Employment and Labour and request cancellation, attaching your business documents and proof of closure.
- Confirm Your UIF Cancellation
After cancelling UIF, it’s important to confirm that the process has been completed. Check your uFiling account or request confirmation from the Department of Labour. Keep any confirmation letters or emails as proof that your UIF registration or claim has been officially cancelled.
