Romain Bardet is a former French professional racing cyclist born on November 9, 1990, in Brioude, France.

He competed at the highest level of road cycling for 14 seasons, riding for UCI WorldTeam Team Picnic–PostNL until his retirement from road racing in mid-2025 following the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Bardet turned professional in 2012 and became one of France’s leading general classification contenders in Grand Tours, particularly the Tour de France, where he carried national hopes for ending a decades-long drought without a home winner.

Off the bike, he pursued studies in business at the Grenoble School of Management and is a certified sommelier with interests in geopolitics and family life, including being a father to his son Angus.

    Siblings

Romain has one sibling, his sister Lisa Bardet.

While details about Lisa’s personal life remain private, she has been mentioned in connection with supporting her brother’s career, including interning at events like the Tour de France during his early professional years.

    Career

Bardet’s professional journey began in 2012 with AG2R La Mondiale, where he quickly made his mark by finishing fifth overall in the Tour of Turkey.

He transitioned to Team DSM (later Picnic–PostNL) in 2021, seeking a fresh challenge after nearly a decade with AG2R.

Throughout his career, he excelled in stage races, targeting Grand Tours while balancing aggressive racing with personal growth, including fatherhood which reshaped his priorities.

Bardet announced his retirement from road racing in 2025 to focus on gravel events and family time, reflecting on a career defined by persistence amid high expectations as France’s “Great French Hope” for Tour success.

His style—sober, attacking, and intelligent—earned respect, though he expressed regret for not diversifying Grand Tour focuses beyond the Tour de France earlier.

    Accolades

Bardet’s palmarès highlights his prowess in the mountains, with four Tour de France stage victories across 2015, 2016, 2017, and a memorable 2024 win on stage 1 alongside teammate Frank van den Broek, securing his sole day in yellow.

He achieved overall podiums at the Tour with second place in 2016 and third in 2017, alongside five consecutive top-10 finishes from 2014 to 2018, the 2019 King of the Mountains jersey, and the 2015 combativity award.

Beyond the Tour, he claimed the 2022 Tour of the Alps general classification, a stage at the 2021 Vuelta a España, silver at the 2018 World Road Race Championships, and early wins like the 2013 Tour de l’Ain.
