Early Life
Robinson José Canó Mercedes was born on October 22, 1982, in San Pedro de Macorís, Dominican Republic. He was named after legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson.
Baseball was already part of Canó’s family. His father, José Canó, was a professional baseball pitcher who appeared in six games for the Houston Astros in 1989.
Canó spent one year at Barringer High School in Newark, New Jersey, before returning to the Dominican Republic. He attended San Pedro Apostol High School, where he played both baseball and basketball.
He also played for his hometown team, Estrellas Orientales, in the Dominican Winter Baseball League. His performances eventually attracted the attention of Major League scouts.
