Windscreen wipers are essential for maintaining clear visibility while driving, especially in rain or dusty conditions. Over time, the rubber on the blades wears out, causing streaks or squeaking sounds. Replacing them regularly ensures your safety and keeps your windscreen clean. Changing windscreen wipers is a quick and simple task you can do yourself without needing a mechanic. Here’s how to change windscreen wipers correctly.

    1. Identify the Correct Wiper Size

Before replacing your wipers, check your car’s owner’s manual or look up your vehicle’s make and model online to find the correct wiper blade size. Some cars have different lengths for the driver’s and passenger’s sides, so measure both if needed. You can also check the existing wipers for size markings printed on the blade. Using the right size ensures proper fit and coverage.

    1. Lift the Wiper Arms Away from the Windscreen

Turn off your car and make sure the wipers are in their resting position. Carefully lift the wiper arm away from the windscreen until it stays upright on its own. Be gentle — the arm is spring-loaded, and letting it snap back can crack your windscreen. It’s a good idea to place a towel or cloth on the glass just in case the arm slips.

    1. Remove the Old Wiper Blade

Look for the release tab or clip where the wiper blade connects to the arm. Press or pull the tab, then slide the old blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm to detach it. Some wipers use a hook, while others use a pin or latch connector. If it feels stuck, gently wiggle it until it comes off — do not force it, as you might damage the arm.

    1. Attach the New Wiper Blade

Take your new wiper blade and line it up with the arm’s connector. Slide or clip it into place until you hear or feel it click securely. Give it a slight tug to confirm it’s locked in properly. The new blade should sit firmly on the wiper arm without any looseness. Repeat the same process for the other wiper if both need replacement.

    1. Lower the Wiper Arms Carefully

Once both new blades are attached, slowly lower the wiper arms back onto the windscreen. Avoid letting them snap down, as this can damage the new blades or the glass. Make sure the blades rest evenly along the surface.

    1. Test the New Wipers

Turn on your car and activate the wipers with washer fluid to test them. Check that they move smoothly across the windscreen and clear water evenly without leaving streaks or noise. If they make uneven contact, ensure they’re installed correctly and not upside down.

    1. Maintain Your Wipers Regularly

To extend the life of your new wipers, clean them regularly with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris. Avoid using them on a dry windscreen, as this can wear out the rubber faster. Most wiper blades last about six to twelve months, depending on weather conditions and usage.
