Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), pledging to protect the party’s legacy following the death of its leader, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during Raila’s national funeral service at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday, Sifuna dismissed speculation about his political allegiance and vowed to keep ODM strong and united.
“Because ODM is one of your biggest legacies, I, as Sifuna, will do everything in my power to keep this party together, even in the face of provocation — and you know what we are talking about,” he said.
The Senator urged ODM leaders to avoid internal divisions and take time to reflect and consult with party supporters across the country on the way forward.
“In my view, this is not the time to push divisive narratives within ODM. ODM is a party for everyone. We as leaders should show unity so that other members can follow suit,” Sifuna added.
He emphasized that he would not be part of any efforts that could lead to the party’s collapse.
“I will not be among the people who contribute to this party’s downfall. I want to encourage the leaders of ODM — let’s be quiet and listen to the people and what they want,” he said.
Ruth Odinga, Raila’s younger sister, also echoed the call for unity, urging party members to honour her brother’s legacy by keeping ODM intact.
“ODM must remain one. That’s what he stood for — unity, peace, and justice for all,” she said emotionally.
East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member Winnie Odinga also addressed mourners, hinting at a possible return to Kenyan politics.
While thanking President William Ruto for standing with the Odinga family during the mourning period, Winnie appeared to signal her readiness to continue her father’s political legacy.
“Your Excellency, our people appreciate your honouring my father. Thank you for standing with us,” she said. “You should also know, in case you are wondering, I am ready to return home.”
Her statement drew loud applause from the crowd, with many interpreting it as a sign that she could soon take on a more active role in national politics, possibly in collaboration with President Ruto’s administration.
