Autopsy says victims at Raila body viewing event at Kasarani were shot in head, chest

Three people who died at the Moi International Kasarani Stadium during the viewing of the body of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were shot in the chest and head, an autopsy on their bodies showed.

The victims were shot by police as the security team tried to stop a mob from accessing a VIP section area where the body was being prepared for public viewing on October 16, 2025.

This was a day after the death of Odinga in India.

Two others died at the Nyayo Stadium in a stampede. More than 300 people were injured in the chaos.

Those who died were identified as Vincent Otieno Ogutu, 36, Evan Onyango Kiche, 40, Josfae Jida Burka, 42 and Josephine Anjao Akeng’o.

Bullets recovered from the bodies of Evans Kiche and Vincent Otieno Ogutu were handed over to the Independent Police Oversight Agency (IPOA) for further forensic analysis, while one unidentified body remains at City Mortuary.

Government Pathologist Bernard Midia conducted the exercise at the City Mortuary.

There were five bodies at the mortuary from the chaos witnessed at the Kasarani Stadium and Nyayo Stadium.

Three were killed at Kasarani and two at Nyayo Stadium.

“There were three males and two females, young adults. On two of them, we have found penetrating gunshot wounds to the head, with severe damage to the brain.”

“A third victim had a gunshot wound that penetrated through the chest and abdomen, causing tendon injuries to both chest and abdominal organs. The fourth victim, from Nyayo Stadium, died from what we call ‘fixed here’—a condition consistent with suffocation,” said Midia.

The families were present at the event at the mortuary. A group of human rights activists was also present.

The families are now demanding justice and answers on what transpired at Kasarani and Nyayo.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who was present, said he would hire lawyers on behalf of the families to help them seek justice.

Police have not formally issued a statement over the incidents. But insiders say the chaos was inevitable.

The chaos started from the moment the plane carrying the body of Odinga landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with some of his supporters breaching the security barriers and stopping at the restricted area of the airport.

They forced officials to remove the body from the plane and marched with it for 30 kilometers to Kasarani Stadium where more chaos broke out.

Authorities at the airport were forced to close it for two hours to address the breaches. Authorities had underrated the anticipated chaos.
