The Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) announced it must relocate its Mombasa shelter and clinic by the end of December 2025.

This is after being directed by Bamburi Cement Ltd to vacate the Nyali premises it has occupied for more than 40 years.

The shelter — the region’s oldest animal welfare facility — currently cares for around 250 animals and provides services including rescue, treatment, rehoming, vaccinations, humane population control, and cruelty investigations.

“This news came as a shock to us and to the Mombasa community that has supported our work for decades,” said Emma Ngugi, KSPCA’s Executive Director. “It’s a huge challenge for us as a small organisation funded entirely by donations. But we hope that, with the community’s help, we can rebuild stronger — creating a modern, sustainable home for animals on the coast.”

In a major boost, Mombasa Cement Ltd has stepped in to donate a larger piece of land and will construct the infrastructure for a new KSPCA clinic and shelter.

The planned facility will feature a modern animal hospital, larger shelter spaces for bigger animals, and expanded community programmes, including trap-neuter-release (TNR) and affordable in-clinic care for low-income families.

Despite this support, KSPCA faces significant logistical and financial challenges.

The new site will be located farther from Mombasa, and the organisation hopes to maintain a small Nyali base for adoptions and emergency response.

Unfunded costs include transport, equipment, staffing, and fit-out of the new premises.

KSPCA is appealing for public and corporate support — both financial and in-kind — to help fund the move and ensure continuity of care.

Donations (cash or in-kind) can be made directly through KSPCA Mombasa’s official channels or by contacting their office for partnership opportunities.

Every contribution, large or small, will help the society “build back better” and ensure animal welfare work continues uninterrupted along Kenya’s coast, the agency said.
