Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) MD Charles Ongwae has been arrested alongside six others over the contraband sugar scam.

Others include quality assurance and inspection director, Mr Eric Chesire, and head of the inspection department, Mr Eric Ochieng.

They have apparently been taken to the DCI headquarters for grilling after being invited to record statements.

Their lawyers say that they have been denied access to their clients.

Ongwae on Thursday said that the sugar was not laced with mercury but had traces of lead and cooper, contradicting CS Adan Mohammed and Fred Matiang’i.
