    Ernesto Benjumea Plazas is a renowned Colombian actor born on January 10, 1967, in Bogotá, Colombia.

    He comes from a family deeply rooted in the entertainment industry, being the son of the late veteran actor Carlos Benjumea.

    Ernesto initially pursued studies in medicine but ultimately followed his passion for acting, influenced by his father’s career.

    He began his professional journey in theater in 1989, founding the group Índice Teatro with friends, which continues to operate today.

    His television debut came in 1995, and over the years, he has built a prolific career spanning more than three decades in Colombian television, film, and theater.

    In 2019, he was awarded the title of “Maestro en arte dramático” by the University of Antioquia as part of an initiative to honor and dignify the acting profession in Colombia.

    Ernesto has two sisters, Marcela Benjumea and Paola Benjumea, both of whom have followed in the family tradition by pursuing careers in acting.

    Marcela is a well-known Colombian actress with an extensive resume in television and theater, often collaborating with family members in various projects.

    Paola, similarly recognized in the industry, has contributed to Colombian entertainment through her work in television and stage performances.

    Benjumea’s career took off in theater with his involvement in the Teatro Libre and the formation of Índice Teatro in 1989, where he honed his skills before transitioning to screen work.

    His television breakthrough occurred in 1995 with roles in productions like Tiempos difíciles as Orlando Triana and Victoria as Nicolás, followed by La otra mitad del sol as Pacho.

    Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, he appeared in popular telenovelas such as Hombres as Tomás Holguín, La baby sister as Roberto Villa, and La costeña y el cachaco as Sebastián Morales.

    He gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Octavio Rangel in Sin tetas no hay paraíso in 2006 and Edgar Marino in Hasta que la plata nos separe from 2006 to 2007.

    In the 2010s, Ernesto expanded his repertoire with roles in series like Pablo Escobar: El Patrón del Mal as Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, A corazón abierto as Samuel Toledo, and 5 viudas sueltas as Benjamín Ferreira.

    More recent highlights include his performances in La ley del corazón as Fabio Ruíz from 2016 to 2017, El señor de los cielos as Melquiades Soler ‘Penumbra’ in 2017, and Ventino: el precio de la gloria as Luis Carlos Esguerra in 2023.

    On the big screen, he has featured in films such as Juana tenía el pelo de oro as a deacon in 2006, Gordo, calvo y bajito as González in 2012, and more recently in Historia de un crimen: Mauricio Leal as Nuñez in 2023.

    Accolades

    In the Premios TVyNovelas, Benjumea was nominated for Best Antagonistic Actor in a Telenovela in 2015 for Un sueño llamado salsa and in 2014 for 5 viudas sueltas, as well as Best Supporting Actor in 2008 for Hasta que la plata nos separe and Best Revelation Actor in 1996 for La otra mitad del sol.

    He fared well at the Premios India Catalina, winning Best Supporting Actor in 1997 for Hombres, with nominations in 2013 for ¿Dónde está Elisa? and in 1996 for La otra mitad del sol.

    Additionally, he earned the Premio ACPE for Actor Revelation for his work in La otra mitad del sol.
