A couple was arrested over claims that they murdered their nine-year-old daughter and buried the body in a shallow grave in Eshiabwali village, Kakamega County.
The body of the girl was on January 26, 2026 exhumed from a shallow grave outside the couple’s house in the village.
The motive of the murder was not immediately established. Police said the suspects included a man and his two wives.
The girl is said to have died on January 24 and the couple kept the body in the house until January 26, 2026 at 4 am when they buried it in the grave wrapped in a piece of cloth.
Hours later, police arrived and found the couple hiding in a river side in the area and arrested them before they led the team to the said grave. The police had been told the girl was missing from the home and her whereabouts were not known.
The husband claimed the girl was hit by a stone and died. He feared reporting the same to the police.
Police moved the body to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures. The discovery drew the attention of a crowd in the area as police vowed justice for the grade six four girl.
In Kaptagat, Elgeyo Marakwet County, one Mathew Kiptoo, 45 was found dead on the roadside.
The cause of the death was not immediately established, police said.
The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

Two suspects were arrested over the recovery and were under interrogation. The recovery happened following a shooting incident that happened on January 16 and Janu 25, 2026 in the area.
The two were arrested within Ifo Refugee Camp and had buried the weapon in a shallow hole. It was wrapped in a jacket and stashed in a gunny bag then. Police said they were looking for a third suspect in the saga and that the weapon was sent for ballistic tests. This will enable the investigators to know if the weapon had been used in any crime in the country.
